meets expectations

Week 39: Baba Yaga

Martial Arts

We rewatched John Wick 3 and I have to ask: When did martial arts in film disappear? Back in my day we could at least count on some straight-to-DVD movie that had a handful of fight scenes, even if it was bootleg. Are kids reenacting jiujitsu fight scenes in their bedroom? Are there martial arts schools in suburban strip malls?? Have we lost it all???

Where Western fighting is so…staccato, so…locker room, lug, beat-your-chest WWE, martial arts are swift, intentional and poetic. It's an underrated dual-skill of body coordination and physical defense where you have to master your ballet and proactively dodging your opponent's. It's a rare art that can be done solo, a pair., or if you're Reacher (now streaming!), threes a crowd. I want to see ax kicks and pop up back kicks and less gun reloading. I want to hear breathing during fights and less click, click, boom.

Friends

I'm missing my friend's bachelorette and wedding which is annoying and devastating. I wish I had a better, more eloquent way to share the emotion of pregnancy frustration and FOMO but I don't.

Pop Culture

Furious is very good and very hard to watch. Worse still, Jake MF Lacy. This guy, signing up for every asshole role he can find and doing a stand up job. Despite a 1940s face, he's got that 1970s serial killer disarming charm, the one that made so many people trust a handsome chip off the old block.

I mean saying, "did I do that to you?" And "I love you" in a span of ten seconds is just unbelievably delusional and disgusting.
